The Boxer’s Corner | Book Review

My husband went to bed early recently and left me alone downstairs to finish The Boxer’s Corner. I was apparently wailing because he came downstairs to make sure I was okay. I’d woken him up. So much of Miguel Barron’s powerful memoir hit close to home – in my own journey with cancer and in remembering my mom’s. Miguel so poignantly shares the intimate moments of his relationships with his wife, sons, and friends as his wife battled metastatic breast cancer. The stories of how he and his wife handled her disease resonated as I reflected on discussions I’ve had with my husband throughout my years of facing metastatic cancer. We each want a different amount of information. We each handle scans and doctor’s visits differently. We are each allowed our own opinions, yet so often, it’s mine that is listened to.

This book is a must read for the caregiver, patient and medical community. If you are a caregiver, this book will leave you feeling validated. If you know a caregiver and are struggling to understand or support them, this book will help you do that. As a patient, it reminded me of the sacrifices and struggles my husband faces as he embraces cancer with me. For the medical community, this will give you insight on what’s often missed in the clinic.

You can purchase The Boxer’s Corner here.  It is not available on audible, but it is a very quick read!

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story, Miguel.
